Preparing for China

News Update

Winners of the 2009 ALB China Law Awards, the highest accolade in the legal industry in 2008, were announced at a gala ceremony in Shanghai on 24 April. Around 300 industry luminaries and business leaders attended the event and 64 organisations, including law firms, in-house legal teams and investment banks, shared the 97 trophies across 36 categories. PRC firms Jun He, King & Wood and Jingtian & Gongcheng; international firms Freshfields, Clifford Chance, Linklaters and Sullivan & Cromwell; and investment banks JP Morgan and CICC were the biggest winners in the industry's night of nights, receiving three or more awards each. Different from the previous results, this year's awards were shared between the largest numbers of organisations over the past six years, a reflection of the country's ever more dynamic and diverse legal market. Despite the gloomy economic environment of 2008, there were still a great number of high-profile and influential deals done, which involved many leading legal and financial advisors adopting innovative and complex structures. Chinalco's acquisition of a stake in Rio Tinto, for example, was awarded the M&A Deal of the Year - one of the most competitive and sought-after categories. All winners were chosen by an independent panel of some 26 industry experts from the finalists selected by the research team. A full list of winners and more information about ALB's awards series, research process and judges can be found by clicking here. A complete guide to the who's who of the China legal profession, complete with analysis of why the winners were chosen by the independent panel and researchers, will be published in the May issue of the ALB China magazine. Client Testimonial

One of the best China lawyers based in Shenzhen! I appreciated this Shenzhen lawyer's service because they helped me achieved my goals, though it was a tough mission. They are English speaking lawyers, so there are absolutely no communication barrier you likely encounter elsewhere. What impressed me is these Shenzhen lawyer's quick response and professional service, two characteristics which I treasure most. Although the Shenzhen lawyers are based in south China, they represent clients across the country, so you can also call them China lawyer! - Johnson
